A New Chapter: How Volumes Bookcafe Champions Open Books

In Lincoln Square, Volumes Bookcafe is a haven for book lovers. But their mission goes beyond selling stories—they’re dedicated to creating them. That’s why they’ve partnered with Open Books, a nonprofit that provides literacy experiences for thousands of readers each year through inspiring programs.

Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that operates a bookstore, provides community-based literacy programs, and mobilizes volunteers to promote reading and writing skills. Proceeds from their bookstore fund reading and writing programs for students across Chicago.

“We believe in the power of books to change lives”

The collaboration is a natural fit. “We believe in the power of books to change lives,” says the owner of Volumes. “Open Books puts that belief into action.” Volumes acts as a permanent donation drop-off point for Open Books, making it easy for the community to pass along their used books. They also co-host author events where a percentage of sales benefit Open Books’ programs.

“Volumes is a true community partner,” says the Executive Director of Open Books. “The book donations we receive from their store are consistently high-quality, which helps us fund our programs.” A customer remarked, “I love that I can buy a new book for myself and drop off a bag of old books for Open Books all in one trip.”
