For most, laundry day is a chore. But for Chicagoans experiencing homelessness, a clean set of clothes can be a matter of dignity. That’s the profound understanding behind a partnership between Pocha Laundromat in Lakeview and The Night Ministry, an organization providing critical services to those in need.
The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization that compassionately provides housing, health care, and human connection to community members who are unhoused or poor. From their Health Outreach Bus to their youth shelters, they offer support to those who have been forgotten.
The owners of Pocha Laundromat noticed The Night Ministry’s bus nearby. “We saw the incredible work they were doing and asked a simple question: ‘How can we help?'” they recall. The answer was laundry. Now, The Night Ministry’s outreach team distributes vouchers for free wash-and-dry cycles at Pocha, where staff offer a welcoming, judgment-free presence.
“This partnership is about so much more than clean clothes,” explains a street medicine team member. “It’s a point of connection and a moment of normalcy for our clients.” One individual who uses the service shared, “When you’re living on the street, being clean feels like being human again. It helps you hold your head a little higher.”
