Planting Seeds of Change: How Kozie Prery helps Blackstone Bicycle Works Grow

At Blackstone Bicycle Works, kids on the South Side learn more than just how to fix a flat tire—they learn teamwork, business skills, and responsibility. This youth education program needed an outdoor space to connect with nature. Enter Kozie Prery, a landscape design firm specializing in native, sustainable gardens.

Blackstone Bicycle Works is a community bike shop and youth program of the Experimental Station in Woodlawn. It provides a safe, educational space where youth learn bicycle mechanics, business management, and cycling skills, supporting their development of self-respect and independence.

Kozie Prery’s founder saw an opportunity to help. “Our mission is to reconnect people with the natural world,” they explained. “We wanted to create a garden for them that was both beautiful and educational.” Over two weekends, the Kozie Prery team volunteered their time, working alongside youth from Blackstone to design and install a native plant and pollinator garden, donating all materials.

“The Kozie Prery crew didn’t just build a garden for us; they built it with us,” says a Blackstone youth mentor. “Our kids learned about native plants and why pollinators are important. It’s their space now.” A 14-year-old participant added, “It’s cool to see the bees and butterflies. It’s like our own little park.”
