Every morning, the team at Metric Coffee on Fulton Street focuses on the perfect pour. But their passion for creating a warm, welcoming space extends beyond their cafe doors. For the past two years, Metric Coffee has partnered with One Tail at a Time (OTAT), a local animal rescue committed to saving at-risk animals from overcrowded shelters.
One Tail at a Time is a no-kill animal rescue that has saved over 10,000 dogs and cats since its founding in 2008. They provide comprehensive care, including medical treatment, foster homes, and behavioral training, to ensure every animal is ready for a loving, permanent home. Their work relies heavily on community support and dedicated volunteers.
The partnership began organically. “So many of our staff and customers are passionate about animal rescue,” says Xavier Vazquez, co-owner of Metric Coffee. “We wanted to do more than just put a donation jar on the counter.” Metric now hosts a quarterly “Adoption Cafe,” where OTAT brings adoptable dogs to their spacious patio. Metric also created a special “Rescue Roast” blend, with 15% of all sales going directly to OTAT’s medical fund. “It’s our best-selling blend,” Xavier notes with a smile. “People love knowing their daily coffee is helping save a life.”
For OTAT, the collaboration is invaluable. “Metric has introduced us to a whole new community,” says Heather Owen, OTAT’s Executive Director. “Their ‘Adoption Cafe’ events are incredible for visibility. Last quarter, three dogs found their forever homes right there on the patio. That’s the real impact—it’s not just fundraising, it’s community building.” This partnership is proof that a simple cup of coffee can be a powerful tool for good.
